Afro Hair Transplant

Although many people think that people of white race complain about hair loss more often, it is possible for people of all races to experience hair loss. For this reason, many people of African or Caribbean origin who have hair loss or thinning problems resort to Afro hair transplantation, which is a permanent and effective method to restore their hair.

What is Afro Hair Transplantation?

Afro hair is different from normal hair types. Since it has a unique root and natural curly hair feature, Afro hair transplantation is considered a more difficult and complex process than standard hair transplant procedures. Although the Afro hairline can be short or medium-high, the hairline of individuals with other hair types is higher. Therefore, such planning should be done meticulously during Afro hair transplantation.

Who is Afro Hair Transplantation Applied to?

Hair loss in men often occurs on the crown of the head as a result of androgenic hair loss, also known as male pattern baldness. On the other hand, a large pattern in Afro men can become the main cause of hair loss.  Afro women often encounter Traction Alopecia hair loss caused by frequent braids and chemical hair straighteners. In such cases, successful results can be obtained with Afro hair transplantation.

How is Afro Hair Transplantation Performed?

Since Afro hair transplantation has different structural features, the transplantation process must be performed by people with sufficient experience and expertise in this field. Afro hair roots are located more on the scalp than other hair types due to the curls in their roots. In this case, larger FUE incisions may be required to accurately remove each graft from the area. In order to obtain the desired results from Afro hair transplantation, the structure of the hair follicles is evaluated.

Afro hair transplantation can be performed with FUE or FUT method. In the FUE method, grafts taken from the donor area are placed in the channels opened in the target area. In addition to hair follicles, the grafts also contain the surrounding fat tissue. Follicular units called grafts are meticulously transferred to achieve the most natural appearance with minimal risk.

The other method that can be applied in Afro hair transplantation is the FUT method. It is not a frequently preferred method due to scarring and slower healing time.

Recovery Process After Afro Hair Transplantation

After Afro hair transplantation, the head should never be tilted and should be kept upright during sitting and sleeping. A balanced nutrition programme should be applied for healthier and faster hair growth. Foods rich in vitamins and minerals must be included in the nutrition programme. During the healing process, the doctor's instructions should be followed completely.

Alcohol and smoking should not be consumed for 7 days after Afro hair transplantation in order not to negatively affect the healing process. It is important to take a break from sports activities for a few weeks after the application. The application area should be kept dry for 48 hours after Afro hair transplantation and activities that may cause sweating should be avoided. Medications prescribed against a possible infection should be used regularly.

In addition, you should not be in environments such as sauna, Turkish bath, steam room and pool for 4 weeks. The crusts formed in the area after Afro hair transplantation usually disappear spontaneously within 2 weeks. Shock spillage during the healing period is a normal condition. The transplanted hair begins to grow again approximately 3 months after the application. Since almost all transplanted grafts will have grown 12 months after Afro hair transplantation, it may be possible to see the final results in this process.
