Teeth Whitening

Teeth colour may vary from person to person. In addition to congenital differences in tooth colour, it is also possible to have discolouration and staining of the teeth due to various reasons over time. Regular brushing and flossing of the teeth is extremely important for oral and dental health, but it is not enough to achieve the desired whiteness of the teeth.

Failure to remove the discolouration of the teeth despite the use of toothpastes and rinseers may cause the individual to be aesthetically dissatisfied with his/her appearance and to experience loss of self-confidence. In such cases, the application of teeth whitening methods, also known as bleaching, can be beneficial.

What is Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening is the process applied to remove discolouration and staining of the enamel and dentin layer of the teeth due to various reasons. Although it is possible to remove the darkening of the natural tooth colour due to various reasons over time by polishing and scaling, this is not valid for every discolouration. When such problems are experienced, it is possible to provide a few tones of lightening in the natural colour of the tooth by removing the stains on the teeth with teeth whitening, depending on the current dental condition of the person.

Who is tooth whitening suitable for?

Basically, teeth whitening can be done to anyone who is over the age of 18 and wants their teeth to have a whiter appearance than their current state. However, since there may be some conditions that prevent teeth whitening, such conditions should be checked and the decision of suitability for the teeth whitening procedure should be made specifically for the patient.

Teeth whitening is not performed for individuals with problems such as gum recession, deep cracks in tooth enamel, gingivitis and tooth abscess. In addition, if there is damage to the dentin area of the individual due to the problem of clenching or grinding teeth, teeth whitening cannot be applied. If the patient has caries or decay in the teeth, these conditions must be treated before teeth whitening is performed.

How Is Teeth Whitening Performed?

Teeth whitening is applied by two different methods: home and office type teeth whitening.  Which method will be preferred is determined specifically for the patient by evaluating many factors. Office type teeth whitening is a method that is performed by the dentist in a clinical environment and provides more effective results in a shorter time. The number of sessions to be applied is also decided according to the patient's needs and response to the procedure.

Tartar cleaning is performed before the application. This is also an effective factor in ensuring the permanence of the results to be obtained. A protective material is applied to the gums to prevent any possible damage that may be caused by the teeth whitening agents used in office type teeth whitening. Teeth whitening agents are then applied to the teeth. It is activated by laser or different light sources and left for a while. At the end of the time, the teeth are cleaned and it is decided whether a repeat session is required.

Home teeth whitening is planned by the dentist. It is applied in the home environment under the control of the dentist but by the patient himself/herself. Special plaques are prepared for the patient. The patient applies the tooth whitening gels given by the dentist into these plaques and wears them on his teeth for the specified period of time. The duration of treatment is determined individually for the patient.

If the dentists deem appropriate, home-type teeth whitening is also applied to support the results obtained after office-type teeth whitening, which is called combined teeth whitening.

Recovery Process After Teeth Whitening

Routine dentist controls, oral and dental care should not be neglected after teeth whitening. Since the teeth are more susceptible to discoloration after the application, foods and drinks that may cause discoloration on the teeth should not be consumed in the early period. In addition, the habit of paying attention to the food and beverages consumed should be gained in order to ensure that the results obtained are long-lasting.
